There are a lot of winners at La Bottega’s lunch counter. Behind the ByWard Market grocery store’s staggering offering of deli meats, cheeses, olive oils and other foodie staples, the kind ladies in the kitchen will happily serve you fine lunch-sized pizzas or a tasty Italian club sandwich of chicken breast, pancetta, pesto and melted friulano cheese. But La Bottega’s most popular dish is the Calabria Mia sandwich.

It must be the gestalt of ingredients: a heaping helping of warm, spicy, crisp-on-the-edges calabrese salami; sweet roasted red peppers; a hint of rosemary; and unctuous goat cheese gluing thins together, sandwiched in thick slabs of focaccia.

Oh baby. The $6.95 offering comes with a side order of salad that is less exciting by comparison, but does help mitigate any misgivings one might have about consuming so much greasy (and toothsome) meat.

You could also buy the ingredients at La Bottega (64 George St.) and make the sandwich at home. But would you taste the love? The lunch counter is open 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Saturday.
