Rated Number 1 La Bottega Nicastro 64 George St. 613-789-7575 www.labottega.ca Open daily
Why it's good: La Bottega is owned by Pat Nicastro, a fifth-generation Italian grocer (his father and uncles own the Merivale Road Nicastro's). The ByWard Market location has a wide selection of Italian imports, from olive oils and pastas to cookies, sauces and vinegars. More important, it is also one of Ottawa's best delis, with informed staff happy to help you craft a perfect cheese or charcuterie selection. Regulars watch the bi-weekly flyer for great specials, as well as regular Italian cooking classes and other special events.
Tips: This place is known for its impressive sandwiches, freshly made to your specifications. The tables in the back kitchen and on the sidewalk provide superb people-watching opportunities, making this is a fantastic lunch spot.
